Steven quote:I’m very competitive yet I’ll concede defeat
Win or lose, too many variables at play outside human's control
Anyway, it serves as my motivation
Winning is victory, losing is defeat, I did my best, what’s there to fear.
Self-confidence may not necessarily ensure a win, but without it, you will surely lose.

有信心未必會贏,無信心一定會輸.

I wondered at fate’s timely intervention; its timing was impeccable, right on when I was all set to leave entertainment and move on to a different circle. Why pull me back again? Did it mean I should stay? I had already put in three years in this circle, and was fully cognizant of the vagaries of an entertainment career; a gamble if ever there was one. If I stay, does it mean I would have to gamble one more time? Put in another three more years? How many three years could I bet on?

~~~~~~~~PERCEPTIONS~~~~~~~~
Lotus - Fan
He is a simple person, so simple that one can readily guess his thoughts from his words and deeds, and from his writings. He is quick with an often childlike smile, lacking guile. Yet paradoxically, he is a man hard to fathom, his warm smiles concealing his thoughts, he is like a pool of calm spring water, seemingly an open book at a glance. Just when you thought you had penetrated deeply enough into its depth, almost reaching the bottom, he would unexpectedly confuse your eyes; a flick of a hand, a blink of an eye; in a split second, the pool of spring water muddies. post 1366
Chung Hui Ling - board member of Regeneration Society
Xiu Ma Goh’s life wisdom today is arduously gained and sharpened from all the hard knocks experiences learned from the University of Society. post 1716
James Wong Jim - late song composer & lyricist
We talked about books; he was very knowledgeable on them. As we chatted amiably along, I was inwardly pleased with him; for nothing pleases me more than well-read young people. That interview was a pleasure. Ma Chun Wai once again made me sit up and see him with new eyes and anew respect. post 382
Chen Jia Ying (陳家瑛) - artistes' manager
Ma Zai is very discerning of things around him. His sense of perceptiveness is very strong. He is very sharp. A strong perceptive insight will only benefit an artist in his entertainment work. He is very perceptive in that he can penetrate other people’s innermost thoughts. post 643
Shuang Jie’s Secret Talk: Steven Ma Undergoing Metamorphosis
Jan 7 2010
I believe Steven Ma is undergoing metamorphosis. He has transformed himself from a ‘shuai ge’, a ‘xiu sang’, into a ‘shuai ge’ who uses acting skill to win over more viewers. Really should applaud him as an encouragement!
A Watchdog Tale is but a sketch on real life drama, a far cry from the likes of Beyond the Realm of Consciousness or Born Rich. Nevertheless, both Steven and Linda Chung drastically transformed themselves for this series. Especially Steven’s obnoxious character of a Hakka jerk, who, nonetheless, possess a good heart, and is filial to his mother; hence, this jerk is still worthy of many females’ appreciation!
Whilst in production, Steven did share some amusing anecdotes that had occurred in the course of shooting. But at the time the series was not aired yet, so what he said I could not readily relate to, then; but now that the series is out all the funny stuff he had told me came back.
When I came upon an especially enjoyable and amusing scene, I had this urge to call him immediately, just to chat and laugh with him, of course, at the same time to praise him directly. But that was just a passing thought for when I was free to call him up he was all tied up with work; turn out he is busily preparing the recording for that cooking show. He has to get hold of a “kitchen god” to be his partner. Even without working on a series, he is still kept pretty busy.
Forgot to mention his duet with Linda Chung. It is a rather pleasant and lighthearted song but will it become a classic? Hard to tell. Too bad I do not have Linda’s contact because I would like to ask her where she got that wig she wore in the series. That wig was truly atrocious and adversely affected her. Don’t understand why TVB would not spend money to get a better wig or maybe the person-in-charge was just being sloppy. People with sight can all see how very atrocious that wig was. Poor Linda!
A Watchdog’s Tale tactically gives way. Beauty of the Game’s finale viewing.
Jan 6 2010
“Beauty” starring Sharon Chan, Kate Tsui and Christine Ng is finishing up its run this week. A two-hour show will be aired on Thursday and Friday, respectively. Therefore, A Watchdog’s Tale starring Steven Ma and Linda Chung has to be taken off the air for these two days, consequently, incurring complaints from the viewing public.
Yesterday through a phone interview, TVB Public Relation Assistant Manager, Mr. Tseng, explained: “This is merely a program tactical arrangement move. In fact, there have been many series whose finales were also aired two hours straight so that they could be watched in one go. Such as: Beyond the realm of consciousness, The chip off the old block, and Beauty of the game. Even A Watchdog’s Tale during its finale on Jan 23 will be aired as a two-hour show.” When asked why not arranged for “Beauty” finale to be aired on Saturday? Mr. Tseng said: “This coming Saturday is the annual charity night《慈善星輝仁濟夜》, so could only arrange for Thursday and Friday to air the finale shows.”
Congratulations for Steven's thread part II! Thanks tamaya for starting it and doing a good job at it, have to be the most complete thread start I have ever seen.
Read or heard somewhere that Steven is finally going to get a villain role next year? Anyway, I read that TVB is in the planning stage to write a tailored made villain role for Steven. I can't wait for it because I'm sure with Steven's acting skill, he is very capable of nailing down a 3D layered villain. However, I hope TVB will do a better job in their script as the last time they tried to do that to Tavia was lacking a lot in the script department. And I hope by tailoring a role for him, TVB will not forget the importance of other layered characters in the show that played their counterparts to him. To bring out an outstanding character, I believe that the whole story told about by the script itself plays the large role. Best of lucks to Steven! I definitely hope he can get the Best Actor award as soon as possible.
Tamaya,
A tiring day it is today but I still can't help but drop a note here to tell you that this part 2 introduction is so fantastically well done! Awesome work!
It is a benchmark piece to start up a new topic. Thank you so much for the effort.
I have not started watching AWT, will wait till another week or two as I won't be able to stop once it is started. Better hold the brake now and wait for more episodes to be released. SOL is released in January too? Disappointed for Steven and Tavia but I think it is still a wise thing to do than to keep it for too long for a later release in HK. HK viewers will probably be too swamped by Steven if all those series that are completed now are released in HK in 2010.
Steven and Linda's Talk About Characters in Series "A Watchdog's Tale":
Steven says that he really enjoyed playing this character because it is so different from the characters he has played before. People are used to seeing him in those brotherly, gentleman, “nice guy” type characters – he is happy that he gets the chance to play this “country boy” type character. He says his character likes pretty women and is always making fun of Linda’s character for being a tomboy and not having a sexy body (he calls her Chek Lap Kok, which is the name for HK’s aiport – meaning she has a flat chest and unattractive body). His experience learning some Hakka for the series was also memorable for him.
Linda’s character is very tomboyish -- Linda says this role was extremely difficult for her to play because it’s so different from who she really is. She says that she is naturally very “girlish” in nature, her voice is soft, she has long hair, etc. so to play a tomboy and have to adjust her voice plus wear a short wig, it was a very interesting experience for her. People say that with the wig on, she looks almost exactly like Fahrenheit’s Wu Zun (she already bears a resemblance), but she said they didn’t do that on purpose – originally, they were going for a much shorter, skinhead type hairdo, but it was way too short and the wig couldn’t hide all of her hair, so they decided to use the current one instead. Linda says that the best thing she likes about playing this character is that she rarely has to spend any time in makeup – she just puts on the wig, brushes up her eyebrows to make her look more like a boy, puts on some baby cream, and she’s ready to shoot the scene!
In terms of memorable experiences while filming, Steven says there was a small “incident” with Ah Huang that he will never forget. When he was posing with Ah Huang for a picture, the dog suddenly let out a huge yelp…everyone on site was very scared because they thought maybe something happened and were afraid Ah Huang might bite. Steven came to the rescue (because he’s had dogs as pets since he was little, so he is very familiar with how dogs act, what they need, etc.) He told the crew: Don’t worry, it’s nothing! Ah Huang wasn’t trying to bite me…it’s just that I accidently “stepped” on him (probably his tail or something) and he (the dog) turned around and was trying to tell me this.”
Steven says that he loves dogs and knows them extremely well (and is very close with them), so being able to film with these dogs was great for him. He says that dogs probably like being with him because he always has a “dog odor” on his body, since he’s had dogs since he was little. Though personally he doesn’t have a dog anymore since his own dog died awhile back ago, he’s satisfied with playing with his friends’ dogs or filming with dogs.
For Linda, her most memorable experience also involved Ah Huang. She says that as a veterinarian in the series, she has to be close to dogs all the time…she says she’s not afraid as long as the owner of the dog is there, since the dogs are pretty well-behaved. However there was one scene during the filming where she has to examine Ah Huang (check his fur and body, open his mouth to see his teeth, etc.), but Ah Huang actually does not like females, so he looked upset and was about to get angry. Even Steven, who was there with her, told her to be careful….he asked the director to cancel some of the shots where it would be necessary for Linda’s face and hands to have close contact with Ah Huang because he was afraid the dog might actually bite her. Linda said she was really scared, but luckily, they were able to complete the filming of that scene smoothly.
Steven and Linda's Talk about 2009 and Their Plans for 2010:
Steven – first of all, he wishes that going into the new year, everyone has good health and that the H5N1 virus will go away soon. In terms of work, he will be hosting a new variety series in 2010 – it’s a food related series (cooking show) where he will have various cooks as guests and cook stuff with them – the purpose will be to teach the audience how to make professional type dishes with just ordinary cooking. Then he talks about how he actually likes to cook and how he cooked for friends and family recently (he describes the dish that he made and stuff).
Also, the big thing for Steven next year is that he will be returning to the music scene after so many years away….most likely he will work on an album for the coming year (whether it’s behind the scenes or actually singing – it will be related to creating a record album). In terms of series, he will challenge himself to play an “evil” character this year, as it’s something he’s never tried before. He says that people keep telling him that he has been acting for 16 years, yet he has never played an evil character, so it’s time to do so now. He says the producers and directors agreed to give him the opportunity, but most importantly is to find a good script that will have a good “evil” character for him to play.
Linda – First part talks about her work in 2009 (filming the movie 72 Tenants, attending the various HK music awards ceremonies, etc.) . But she was happy doing it and never felt tired because she felt that she gained a lot in 2009 – she had the opportunity to travel to different countries to perform and also release her 2nd album.
Her plans for 2010 are to attend even more awards ceremonies (doesn’t matter if she gets an award or not – just for the experience). Also, she will continue to pursue her music career, but will completely change her image when it comes to music. She says that in the past, her image has always been “innocent good girl” type…this year, she wants to change that to a “cool girl” image…but she stresses she will not do the “sexy girl” image….
In terms of series, Linda says that she has gotten a lot of inspiration from her friends. She says that one of her friends got into an accident and as a result became a handicapped person…seeing what her friend has to go through –from being a “normal” person to having to deal with this big change (being handicapped), is a very difficult journey and internally there are definitely a lot of struggle and pain. She said it will be a challenge to play this kind of role and would help to expand her own inner emotions and feelings – plus it would help send a message to the audience to take care of themselves and cherish good health as well as a healthy body.
Thank you, everybody, for your congratulatory messages.
I'm really enjoying Watchdog a lot. Steven really outdone himself. He performed Ah Gong with verisimilitude.
Akazukin, happy to see you posting again. Who knows if Steven will really get a villain role this year. TVB changes its mind too easily. I'll believe it when it actually happens until then I won't hold my breath.
Steven takes on both hosting programs and series production. 马浚伟主持拍剧两不误
Steven Ma (Mazai) has always concentrated more in shooting series, but now he is venturing into the hosting arena. He admits to this reporter that he did indeed recommend himself for the job, but denies being opportunistic. (as to taking advantage of Amigo Choi’s misfortune). That fact is, his hosting of a program has already been agreed upon in July last year when he renewed his contract. “At the time, I told the company of my desire to host a cooking show and to sing. The company consented. ”
Recently, Steven has been doing rather well. Earlier, he took part in hosting for the East Asian Games. An insider divulged: “Many artistes who have hosted a sports event would usually incur complaints, but he didn’t. So the company feels it can give him more leeway in this direction. He himself came up with the idea for this《大厨出马》program.”
Also, he was the narrator for a documentary program, “Since 1967” 《由1967开始》. This program was previously aired on Mondays at 7 pm. Usually, the ratings for this kind of programs never get passed 20 points but the average ratings for that program was around 23 points. Even Kara Hui praised Steven highly for his pleasing voice. “Initially, I wasn’t aware that it was his voice. It was so pleasant to listen; moreover, it was also able to engage the audience’s emotion. ” In addition, Steven together with talented Eunice Lam Yin Nei went on the game show, Book of Words《正 识第一》,and through his solid grasp of the Chinese language, his team got into top 3, thus qualified for the final round.
Even though being on a variety program can be eye-catching, he expresses that hosting is not the direction he wants to venture. “I’m only interested in cooking.” In the new program, 《大厨出马》, he will introduce many "obscure renowned chefs” who maybe unknown to most viewers, including those who have cooked for past Hong Kong Governors and other dignitaries, as well as their respective signature dish. “I myself enjoyed cooking. In the show, I will also personally do some cooking.”
However, Steven’s career focus is still on series production. As it is, the TVB hit show, A Watchdog’s Tale, that is airing right is starred by him. Steven expresses that he has been receiving constant congratulatory phone calls. Besides congratulating him for the series’ high opening week ratings, some also congratulated him for his successful image transformation in that he performed Chow Yung Gong, a walled village chief, who though a rogue is nonetheless kindhearted, with verisimilitude, giving the viewers a fresh feel.
So what was Steven’s New Year’s wish? He says: “What will be will. Hope this new year what I get is ‘happiness’. He also said that he hopes he can get to act in diverse roles so that the audience will get to see different images of Steven Ma. Presently, Steven still has Stars of Love, Pu Songling and Temptation, these three series that have finished production but yet to be aired. He will start a new series in March this year. Guess in 2010, audience will get to see him on the small screen quite frequently.
Above is Steven's pre-recorded Vancouver interview aired this year. He was the the program's 1st guest star for year 2010.
Two of the conditions for renewing his contract, Steven will host a cooking show and release an album.
"I believe this year, 2010, for the first time I’ll take up the challenge of being an antagonistic role. I hope there is already an initial draft on which I can discuss with the scriptwriter and the producer."
Steven's 16-second cooking show trailer depicts Steven on his quest to invite reluctant master chefs to divulge their culinary secrets on his show. In his quest, Steven climbs endless winding steps carved on tall, cloud covered mountains with a backpack on his bag. Very cute!
Steven as part of tvb group participated in march of million people. Since he walked alongside Stephan Chan during the march, in an interview with Steven, reporters asked if he is Stephen Chan's latest favorite.
Steven: There's a connection in that? They had all lined up already, nothing to do with me. (They especially left that spot for you) Nah, I guess it's because Watchdog is airing right now. Really it had nothing to do with being favored or not. What I'm most happy about is not whether being favored or not but that TVB is gradually fulfilling its contractual promises to me. Such as the cooking show and the preparation of my new album. So I'm very grateful to the management.
Steven Ma suggests to organise a celebration feast for the dogs to Celebrate the good ratings
Wednesday January 13, 2010 Hong Kong
TVB Series "A Watchdog's Tale" held a dog food challenge" on the 11th January. Cast that attended include Steven Ma, Maggie Siu, Linda Chung, Kent Cheng, Koni Lui, Natalie Tong and Raymond Wong. Dogs Ah Wong, Bingo and Woody also attended. The cast produced dog recipes and this attracted the dogs, they didn't listen to their owners and this caused a lot of laughter.
Steven appeared with his dog companion Ah Wong in the series, but Ah Wong wasn't at his best behaviour. The series has received very good viewer ratings. Steven said "The series ratings are quite good and the dogs have also contributed a lot of hard work. On the 17th of January the cast will hold a celebration feast in Tai Po eating Poon Choi (Big Bowl Feast). They will also suggest organising a celebration for the dogs, giving them dog bones, toys and food. Or perhaps they will suggest to watch the finale live together.
The reporter asked Natalie Tong whether she has been in contact with ex boyfriend Amigo Chui? She said "You're asking about him again? We haven't been in contact for ages". The reporter referred to recent reports of Amigo being emotionally depressed and needed Lam Kin Ming to help him? She replied" I don't know, she is more professional. I don't know if he is depressed but people need others to comfort them when they have problems". Amigo has not made a public appearance since the incident and outsiders feel he is a coward. Natalie responded by saying "I believe he will make a public appearance one day".
Zhan Jie together with TVB assistant public relations, Mr. Tseng and Watchdog's producer and scriptwriter held a press conference to rebutt ATV's claim. Zhan Jie said the matter will be referred to the lawyers to take care of. And she demanded an apology from ATV for accusing tvb of 'theft', which will greatly tarnish its reputation.
Steven Ma supports <A Watchdog's Tale> that it's not a copy
Saturday January 16, 2010 Hong Kong
Yesterday Steven Ma took part in the Road Safety Team singing competition promotion and attended in an uniform as an Officer. As his current broadcasting series <A Watchdog's Tale> had been said to copied 2007 ATV planned series, Steven did not believe TVB copied ATV. He felt that the long time writer of <Watchdog> is a very creative person, he believes that he came up with the story himself.
Steven felt that what the Media reported is a not problem, but felt that matters expressed by the people on this issue is a bigger problem. He said: "TVB has a sales presentation every year, they would advertise future series and their synopsis. So, how come no one said <Watchdog> was a copy at that time, but waited until now to say something when its popular with many people discussing it and good TV ratings? He personally feels that back then ATV never finished writing the script, never produced the series or had anything, so how is TVB copying then?
Cupid Stupid first trailer:
http://hyn5-hyn5.blo...-trailer-1.html
Here's the translation:
Tavia: "You will encounter the most important person in your life".
Narrator: "Love matters".
Michael: "He came to be your boyfriend. Isn't he perfect?"
Michael: "Aries and Capricorn are not very compatible".
Narrator: "You will believe in horoscopes..."
Tavia: "You said last night you will love me forever!"
Steven: "If it's no more, then find another one".
Mandy: "Don't treat everyone as a toy, a game!"
Narrator: "...or in feelings?"
Tavia: "You are very important in my heart".
Thanks for the pics, Steven looks really good in the uniform.
Cupid Stupid (previously titled Stars of Love)'s AOD trailer is out in tavia.org download section. It looks like a light-hearted romance series, but I gotta say the trailer didn't seem to sell the triangle between Steven, Tavia and Michael at all. Everything just passed so fast, can only see that the three of them have friendship and the mentioning of the astrology part. Can't wait to see the themevideo and hear the themesong sung by Steven "Heard".
Here's a screenshot of it (credit to tavia.org):
Forgot to comment, the Cupid Stupid poster is nice colour-wise but what's with the position arrangement?! That's so wrong, I was hoping I can get a more romantic post from Stevia, but it turned out...... I hope it doesn't mean that Tavia is going to end up with Michael Tse instead of Steven Ma. At first, since this series is produced by Tsui Yu On and they were originally going to use Chilam and Steven, I was hoping that they can include more touching family scenes like they did for ROTC, especially since they have good supportings in this one (Susan Tse, Kingdom Yuen, etc). But looking at the trailer, it seems all romance. But hopefully, it's because the trailer didn't include all aspects of the series since it's just 30 seconds out of 20 episodes.
Thank you for the heads up on Cupid Stupid's trailer.
I'm with you on the sitting position in the poster. My heart sank when I saw the poster. The poster is nice color wise, (purple is my favorite color) but I find the whole look so generic, so bland as far as telling a compelling story, so hello kitty kind of saccharine - it doesn't give off any vibes, good or bad except for that in your face sitting position - And the story just revolves around these 3 characters, that's it? I too hope the story involves a touching family subplot that will engage the hearts rather than just a generic romance story. I remember Steven mentioning in his yahoo blog that Ci Yat Bo is a pitiful/tragic character. (Maybe he realizes his mistakes too late?) But please no more tug of handkerchief romance like the one in Sits with Steven losing out in the end. But then Steven did say that he and Tavia never seem to have a good ending. So I'll keep that in mind when watching this Cupid gone Stupid series.
Connie Chan Po Chu Complimented Steven Ma on his fried rice.
2010 1/17 Yesterday, A Watchdog’s Tale held a banquet event at the Lam Village. The attendees included Steven Ma, Linda Chung, Maggie Siu, Raymond Wong, and Natalie Tong etc. Steven said that ever since this series aired, many kids have taken to calling him Big Brother Doggie (Gao Gao Goh Goh) because they do not know his name. He thought that was rather cute. During the event the cast burned incense to pray for outstanding ratings for the upcoming weeks. Steven disclosed that the average rating for last week was about 32 points. He said if the series could garner an average rating of 34 points, he would be very satisfied indeed. His New Year’s wish was for everybody to enjoy good health for the rest of the new year.
Later, Steven rushed back to the city to shoot his new cooking series, 《大厨出马》. He had invited Connie Chan Po Chu to be his guest star, who brought along her son, Dexter Yeung. On the set, Steven promptly whipped up “Ma Zai Fried Rice” for Sister Po Chu to sample, who later complimented him for his cooking skill. She said she should now address him as Ma Yeh. Steven explained that he chose to cook fried rice because Sister Po Chu had once personally cooked some fried rice for a fundraising event. He also disclosed that for this program, he would only invite female guest stars because they looked so good when enjoying their food.
Steven said he has no problems doing simple home cooking, especially steam fish and soups. When asked if having a good cooking skill will attract the opposite sex to favor him? He smiled and said: I guess so, but I have a big problem, which is, I do not like to clean up. So must find a girlfriend who is willing to do the cleaning, in return, she doesn’t need to do the grocery shopping and cooking.”
Observations
Steven manages to intergrate his passions for badminton, acting, books, cooking, photography, singing, writing, music, Cantonese Opera, Chinese cultures and history into his career.
He started off as a singer because of his passion for singing and music, occasionally composing and writing songs.
- He is an avid badminton player, so he was tvb badminton commentator for HK 2009 EAG.
- He loves books, so he writes and publishes books on subject that interest him and enlighten his readers.
- He enjoys photography so he published his latest book of prose essays with photos he took.
- He appreciates the art of Cantonese Opera so he took lessons and performed as guest singer.
- He wanted to experience the exhilaration of a live stage play, and so he did a stint as Hamlet in The Chinese Hamlet.
- He wanted to rid himself of his Achilles' heel in dancing so he did Steps.
- He loves Chinese cultures and history, so acting in ancient period drama has become his forte.
- Last but not least, he enjoys cooking, and so he got himself a cooking show to showcase his passion.
To quote James Wong: "what I remember most about him is that he would periodically come up with new stuff. ....And his new stuff would always make one sit up and take notice of him with anew respect. "
Note: Watchdog's finale will be a 2 hour episode on Saturday.
Steven's fried rice sounds delicious. If only we get to try that as well... And congratulations to A Watchdog's Tale for having good ratings. Such ratings are considered very good for the beginning of the year, I believe. It seems like Steven's series often has high ratings among those which are released in this period. In the past, we had SG as well. If only they gave chance for SITS and CS to air at this time, maybe it would have high ratings too.
Nice comment from James Wong. It indeed depicts him very well.
Cupid Stupid's themevideo is out in tavia.org. I have to say that I'm quite disappointed with the themesong. I was expecting that the themesong will have a touching romantic melodies like Chilam's ROTC themesong, but this one is really light-hearted. Well, I guess the whole theme of the series IS light-hearted from the previews in the themesong, nothing too heart-wrenching nor romantic like how it stirred me in SITS and LOW. From the themevideo, it seems like Steven also gets quite a fair share of screentime with the other lady, so his character will probably not as painful as Nip Ji Yuen. Well, despite having to see his love Tavia got stolen by somebody else again (as in LOW and SITS), we get to see a different reaction from Chi Yat Bo this time. Both Sung Man and Ji Yuen knew exactly what they were feeling and showed it instantly on their face, but Chi Yat Bo was again rather slow in reacting. From the time of seeing until the time he realised what he is seeing and actually feeling and to the time he started to show that emotion on his face, there was a delay from the usual Sung Man and Ji Yuen. Chi Yat Bo is indeed slow. And I think Steven does a great job in it. I feel that this character is really something what Steven has not done and it is not a character that we usually see either, very refreshing. And we get to see a different kind of relationship from Stevia too (because LOW and SITS are almost too similar). You will get to see Tavia doing a lot of the initiatives in this one like resting her head and hugging him when she was backriding his bicycle.
I'm with you on the blandness of the theme song. A nice enough song, well sung but music is just not compelling or emotion provoking. Again the word 'generic' comes to mind. Will see, in the past I had misgivings on AJCL and TGC2 too and they turned pretty good.
re: above post - Steven's patrol supervisor appointment
Imo, Steven is not very photogenic; he always looks better on screen than in pictures. In the video whose link is posted below, he looks extremely smart in his uniform.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7HYV0AY8
I found Steven's response quite witty.
Reporter: Mong Mong has 2 stars but you have 3, is it because of your seniority?
(Dai Mong Mong (who's she?) was in the ceremony with him.)
Steven: Cos' I'm older than her.
R: I mean workwise.
S: Actually, MM has been doing this for a longer period than I.
R: Really, but you're of a higher rank than she.
S: Because I'm older than her. Like the kids they'll have one star. We older people, after two years, I might even 4 stars, oh no no, there's no 4 stars. Well, I'm older than them, if you had me start from the very bottom, I'm afraid I don't have the time. So the patrol board was good to me and gave me 3 stars right away. In fact, I only joined in officially last month.
R: Oh yeah?
Seeing Steven's oblivious face is so refreshing. Yat Bo has this very pure innocent look, I'm so used to seeing Steven playing clever smart or mischevious roles that this one is definitely refreshing to watch. Did you watch the themevideo? The first scene with the shadow of Steven and the other girl, the way Steven moved away from her is very funny and very innocent-like.
Even though the themesong is not my ideal, but it kinda grows on me. Like hyn pointed out, I was worried when I heard the last sentence of the lyrics too. Why did the lyrics keep stating that "there is still no sparks"? I thought Ngou Nam liked Yat Bo so there's spark from her side, and I thought Yat Bo later will realise he liked her too so there should be spark from his side too. If there is something that is keeping them away from each other, I have always thought it's Yat Bo's wrong timing, and that definitely shouldn't have anything to do with lacks of love sparks.
^Cupid Stupid 1-5 previews (9 mins) download in steven-ma.org
but it can also be watched online on tudou
I don't want to be spoiled so will not watch it. But from Steven fans' posts, apparently Steven, like in Sits, is once again only a leading man in name based on Yat Bo's limited screen time in the previews.
Watch Ah Gong street singing scene here :loool:
Ah Gong: Are you sure Lulu Sir is training me (to build up his self-confidence) not just playing me?
Sammi: Do it. It'll work.
Watchdog episode 14
It was hilarious how Lulu sir made Ah Gong sing on a street supposedly to build up the latter's self-confidence. Lulu Sir reasons that Ah Gong's own lack of self-confidence is what holding him back from properly training Ah Wong. To instill confidence in him, So Lulu Sir got Ah Gong to make a spectacle of himself by singing a song in the public. Ah Gong rightly is suspicious of Lulu Sir's real motive, that he is being played a fool instead. He begs to back out but Sammi urges him along. So there he is, completely exposed on a public street, a sideshow of utter embarrassment and fidgety discomfiture. :loool: But Ah Gong is nothing if not 'courageous' especially egged on by his 'reward' (a man in love will do anything for his 'woman', a sideshow? nothing to it.) His voice raised a pitch, he explains to the gathering crowd that he is going to sing a song. Biting the bullet, he 'aargh' and promptly belts out a song, phone cameras immediately started clicking away. (I’m surprised thsoe pictures weren't posted online by the extras.) I've to say, Ah Gong can't hold a tune even if Sammi thinks he didn’t do so badly. What a guy! I laughed every time I re-watched this scene.
tvbe watchdog banquet
Steven said when watching JSG awards, he recalled his own 1st time attending JSG's awards presentation night. At the time, on stage and the limelight were the 4 heavenly kings. Those were the days and now a whole new generation stood on the stage.
The change of political wind direction. Macao Daily which used to disparage Steven now praises him. But admittedly the writer is not the same one who regularly dissed Steven.
Macao Daily 1/20 2010
by: 紫藍
Steven Ma May Be A Host.
Steven Ma debuted as a singer in the entertainment industry, but later crossover to a tv artiste. His series generally garnered good ratings. Recently, as Stephan Chan’s latest favorite, his exposure has increased greatly.
Rumor abound that Steven may host J2清談節目, replacing Amigo Choi. This writer feels that this arrangement is most appropriate. First and foremost, Steven’s voice is deep and mellifluous, moreover, he articulates well. He handles seriousness vs playfulness well; this can be evinced from his "voice acting" of "Since 1967". Furthermore, from his brilliant performance in “The Book of Words”, his erudition is apparent and his grasp of culture is impressive.
Anyway, TVB is scrambling for a host, talents like Steven, who possesses both inside and outside, should be made good use of.
The wind is changing for the better for Steven. Now not only he gets to host cooking show, he will get to be an MC too? Hopefully, none of these will adversely affect his involvement in TV series as people who usually become MC have much less time to act in a series. But I'm not worried since Steven seems like a man who knows what he is doing and what he wants to do, so if he accepts a job, I'm sure he's sure about it.
Not only the comments in Macao daily is kinder to him, hk discuss forum too, which is good sign. But for these people who changed their perception only because of his performance in AWT, I do doubt their judgment of acting skill, since they probably never tried to appreciate how well a person portrayed their character, and they can only see people's 'acting' when they tried on different roles. To me, yes, Steven's roles have been similar in one sense to another, but he has portrayed them differently and to the soul of the character.
ATV's accusation doesn't worry me. It sounds like they are only similar in idea, which is not plagiarism, unless all the happenings and the lines are largely the same. Moreover, that's more the matter of TVB and scriptwriter rather than the artistes who performed it. But what I know is it's actually creating more publicity for the series.
I always have dilemma to watch AOD previews because they are so tempting yet I don't want to be spoiled, especially for the series I care about. But I figure that CS is a light-hearted series and the beginning will usually have nothing to spoil about, and so I clicked on it when I have that extra 20 minutes. And I was right, seriously, there wasn't anything in the plot that struck you, which is a pitiful thing. It's too light-hearted that it's not even squeezing any emotion out of me. Why did Stevia have to take on such script, I complain in my mind. Oh well, at least better get to watch them than not. But then again, I agree with the people who say that Steven has too little screentime. From the preview, I feel that Tavia has more than Steven just by a little bit, but what she is doing? Insignificant thing of being a sidekick to Michael. But what is Michael doing? Again, to me, it was rather insignificant. Basically, none of the three main leads have main leads screentime materials. I feel no impact whatsoever from their characters in the scene. What's the point? It's just everyday life. Any message they want to get across? I hope not yet. What happen to Tsui Yu On that can produce a series as moving as ROTC? Don't tell me those are all the works of the scriptwriter.
Anyway, just a sidenote on Chi Yat Bo, I'm actually surprised at the Chi Yat Bo I saw in AOD Preview, he is actually not as innocent and pure as I imagined him to be.
tamaya, thanks for the screencaps. But I can't access the baidu link, don't know why. I hope this is available for DDL soon, so I can watch it. Steven looks good with his suit, although I would appreciate if he does something to his fringe. His fringe is not really complimenting his look.
One day, he should invite Tavia, Linda, and Fala to his show, lol. I'm sure it will be fun, it's older brother cooking (and teaching cooking) for younger sisters episode. And Tavia, Linda, and Fala are good friends with each other too. I'm sure it will be fun, even though scheduling a date for that will be very very difficult.
^Still haven't watch Cupid Stupid AOD preview, but so far, the comments I've read are favorable. Will see how it goes next week.
I'm not fond of Steven's fringe either. I'd rather he sported a hairdo that would make him look more professional. But I like him in his jacket; very smart looking. The beginning of the show was very attention-grabbing --Steven was out on the streets with his beloved camera, taking snapshots of daily life....click..captured...click...captured. Then he got into an analogical spiel about how just like photographers, chefs, too, hope to capture the moment of their guests' expressions enjoying their food, and see that moment as their motivation. After his monologue, his two female assistants got into the picture with him and introduced themselves to the audience. Steven presentation opening was brilliantly done; he was confident, articulate and very presentable. His hosting skill is excellent too, as he smoothly and effortlessly facilitated the conversations and putting his guests at ease with his chatter and charm. Well done, Steven.
Rayfile is undergoing maintenance so not available for use. I can't avail Steven-ma.org's alternate download sites but maybe you can. I was about to post its ddl but I found a better site right 8cyber site complete with sendspace and megauload.
Just drop by to say thank you, Tamaya, for attaching the many photos and articles. I have been reading this blog regularly but did not write. I have watched 13 episodes of AWT to-date. I like comedies and with Steven entertaining, it is an enjoyable series. I like episode 13 most which was so funny esp the part where he was to meet Kent Cheng formally as Linda's bf. The expression on Kent's face in knowing that Steven was Linda's bf and the cheeky look Steven had when presenting himself to Kent as well as those few scenes just before and during the meeting were really so funny that I am still laughing inside remembering them.
He does not look as bad as I thought as the curly hair Ah Gong. Anyway, with charming Ji Yuen still lingering fresh in my memory, I think Ah Gong, unfortunately, will not have a place in my low bit memory space for long.
With max point of 34 now, I am glad that AWT is doing very well.
Break up, make up; Steven's heart remains true to his gf, Vivian.
Eastweek; issue 334. Book 2; Stars’ Words
Topic: A Real Man: Steven Ma
(Nam Yan Lou Gao: 男人老狗 马浚伟)
Date: 1/19/2010
Translator: Tamaya @ asianfanatics.net
A Real Man
At hearing of my interview appointment with Steven Ma, my colleague teased: “Him again?”
Yap! My last interview with him was barely half a year ago. Who ask “A Watchdog’s Tale”to be so popular. Now both adults and kids have taken to calling him his character’s nickname, “Yan Tze Toh” (flip-plop person) Only a lapse of half year, a person normally would not have changed much, as a matter of fact, he pretty much remains the same through the years.
“I’m a rock. Have you ever seen a rock nods its head? How can I change?” (a play on Chinese idiom 顽石点头 )
Especially when he is being serious, people around him will automatically straighten up their backs, even the dogs taking pictures with him will sit properly.
“Honestly, throughout my 38 years, I’ve never been reckless.”
Mother had cancer when he was young. He was not like other kids mollycoddled by mothers. When older, he was busy studying at the same time working to help his family make ends meet. From young, he had learned to be an adult and had never being unruly.
After two glasses of wine down his stomach will then he start to relax.
“The loosening up, appears only after drinking. I’ll suddenly transform into a child, quite a rascal, too!”
De-stressing is good; him behaving like a child actually makes him more genial.
Prudent and discreet, never made a false move. 小心谨慎,未尝有过。——《汉书.霍光传》
Huo Guang was a Han dynasty minister. He left behind a legacy of accomplishments, but his life was summed up with these eight words, is it fortunate or unfortunate? In the past, some people had used those words to describe Ma Zai; actually quite an apt description.
He always radiates this magnetic field that elicits deep respect from other people. For work or for appointments, he is not only punctual but early, too. On the day of the interview, his work was piled up high one over another, yet he could still arrive half an hour earlier.
He consumed copious amount of decaf coffee as stimulant. He quipped: “Many people are scare of me. Earlier, in the March of Millions I shared the same vehicle with some current Miss Hong Kongs. Actually, they had wanted to take pictures with me but didn’t dare to ask!”
A person’s conduct and handling of things are greatly influenced by his/her upbringing and background. Born in 1971, Ma Zai grew up in Shum Sui Po housing estates. He was surrounded by drugs, prostitutes, and gangs. Children living in this kind of environment normally grew into adults who would either strive indefatigably towards self-improvement, or degenerate inevitably into evil doings. Many of the 70’s generation grew up like this.
“At the time, among 10 friends, four would have backgrounds. As a teen walking through Pak Ho Street I was already accosted by prostitutes. Used syringes littered the streets. After graduating middle school, a school mate died committing a crime. As stubborn as I am, if want to be bad, will be bad to the very core. Nobody can control me. If I don’t control myself, it would be disastrous.” On the day the schoolmate died, he knew that between good and evil, he must stand on the side of good.
“Sometimes, I wonder if I should let myself go. Like: to party irresponsibly. When in foreign places, I do go to discos, but shortly, will ask to leave. I dislike the stuffiness and the crowd. There was this one time in a karaoke place, the atmosphere felt wrong, something just didn’t feel right so I left.”
Ma Zai’s letting loose can only be seen after some drinks.
“After drinking, I’ll suddenly become a kid. A rascal. Even though it was the middle of the night, I still tried to drag people out to eat noodles. And talk nonstop.”
“No! I want to go eat noodles. Don’t lah, don’t go ba!”
“Friends who have never seen me drink before, if they did, they would laugh so hard they roll on the floor.”
After two glasses of drink, he most loves to teach people how to dance.
“Disregarding gender or who the person is, I’ll pull him/her up and insist on teaching that person Latin dance.”
In Watchdog, Ma Zai portrayed a slovenly character. Actually he loves to compose and recite poetry. As such, some people consider him a poseur.
“I’m not showing off. Some colleagues ask me to quit talking about poetry; since you object, I won’t talk about it then. But I myself don’t have to give up on it. ”
The fact is, Ma Zai’s Chinese is very good, his spoken English and Mandarin are not bad either. Judging from his performance in the game show, ‘Book of Words’ final round, he is no Stephy and her like. (note: Stephy was ridiculed for her writing errors in her recent book.) But put the blame on his righteousness for keeping the females at bay when they are with Ma Zai.
He is very decorous with the opposite sex.
“Be courteous to the females. And it’s bad to mislead; either through eye expression, action, or contact frequency etc. It’ll be my fault if she misunderstands.”
His regular collaborators like Linda Chung, Fala Chen and Tavia Yeung all treat him as half sister. (Ji Mui) Looks like this gentleman can be trusted. Linda admits that she fell for him during their first collaboration. Fala praises that he can enter the kitchen. (means he cooks well.) Tavia exposes that she had asked him to buy her lingerie. To a certain extent, boundless “yan fu” surrounds him.
“Not only them, I’m also good to Kent Cheng. With friends, opinions, good or bad, should be voiced. Most important is that every spoken word is sincere. What they told me, I’ll not repeat them like stories to other people. Those who have known me long, know that I will not betray them. ”
Taiva loves to trick him. Few months ago when he went to Canada, she asked him to get her a ‘souvenir’.
“She asked me to go to something something Secret (Victoria’s Secret) to buy her stuff. I said fine. Myolie, who was next to her, promptly asked me if I knew what that store sells. Turns out it sells bras and panties. So in the end, I asked Sister Louise Lee Si Kei’s daughter, Tse Ching, to get them. No way will I go in to get them. To get her back, I even asked Tse Ching to buy her a pair of leopard print bra.”
Good sister Tavia has been promoted to 1st line artiste. Ma Zai was forthright about being ambitious in his career. It is not the first time he had said this: “If artistes said they couldn't care less about positions or awards, then they are fibbing you.”
Recently, it is said that he has become Stephen Chan’s latest favorite, Ma Zai tried to shake off any trace of it. “Not just Mr. Chan, many people like Zhan Jie (Catherine Tseng) have all helped me before.”
But it is undeniable that since renewing his contract at the end of last year, his career has taken off onto the right path. Besides currently hosting a food and drink program 《大厨出马》, he will also release a new album this year.
“In the blink of an eye, 16 years already in the industry. Been through both good and bad. Older friends and girlfriend always ask why I don’t share my inner feelings with them. I told them they don’t have to share my worries. All these years, from my mom’s illness to being jeered for two whole years early in my career because of being promoted as : “He’s not Jacky Cheung, not Leon Lai”. Whether being sad or frustrated, let me isolate myself for two days, and I’ll have it resolved.”
Winter departs, spring arrives; what now lies ahead for Ma Zai is a bright and beautiful scenery.
Last year, Ma Zai broke up with red wine girlfriend, Vivian, but they have recently made up.
Quoting Mak Ling Ling: He will get married this year, if not, then next.
What says he?
“Still haven’t reached this stage yet. It’s not just my issue. But I’m awaiting the urge to get marry.”
Ma Zai has a warm home. Mom has passed away for many years, but occasionally he still goes inside her bedroom and facing her picture will speak of his inner feelings.
Coming home late at night after finishing work, Dad will get him a bowl of love soup.
Home, where love resides, and heart anchors.
Right now, it is just missing her.
