The ratings are out for two Korean dramas starring two K-pop idols and it’s not a pretty picture.

Micky Yoochun of TVXQ is starring in “Sungkyunkwan Scandal” on KBS TV while Kim Hyun Joong, leader of SS501, headlines “Mischievous Kiss” on MBC TV.

The two idols are competing to win the hearts of viewers but it seems that they have to do more to increase their respective show's audience share.

Yoochun’s drama started airing last Aug. 30 while Hyun Joong’s premiered on Sept. 1.

The maiden telecast of “Sungkyunkwan Scandal” garnered a rating of 6.3 percent while “Mischievous Kiss” got 3.5 percent, quite low ratings considering the hype that these two dramas have generated, especially when the cast was announced.

“Baker King” still dominated the nationwide ratings with 44 percent last Sept. 1 and MBC’s special program “Dawn” topped the ratings on Aug. 30.

Last year, “Boys over Flowers” (where Hyun Joong was one of the lead cast) garnered a maiden episode rating of 14.3 percent to place seventh nationwide in Korea.

Fans are baffled why the two new dramas tanked in the ratings considering that they are led by two very popular K-pop idols.

Despite this, fans are hoping that “Sungkyunkwan Scandal” and "Mischievous Kiss" will increase their audience share in the succeeding episodes.

I'm not surprise that MK would get low ratings but I didn't expected it will be that low.

I've watched the first ep. , wanted to give up but it will not fair to say the Korean version isn't good as a whole. So, I might continue to watch it but a bit later.

I loved the first two ep. of SS. In my opinion, it is more enjoyable than MK. Not sure if SS based on something but I definitely can't predict what will happen next, that is why I like SS better even though some actors are quite stiff. Some people like me might be too familiar with MK general story already as me myself watch the Japanese, Taiwan (which I loved to death LOL), anime and even read the manga.

I have to say that Baker King is a fresh and awesome drama of 2010. I don't say this by just looking at the ratings because I'm watching the series right now and I can understand why their ratings are that high. The drama doesn't have big names, and it doesn't matter either as the story, plot and script are really good enough to attract viewer from different group of age. At this moment I can't believe that I read some comments (from other site) that BK doesn't deserve such ratings.

EDIT

Something to add, all actors in BK are really incredible by portraying their given role so far :thumbsup

I can only speak for myself, I liked the Baker drama but stopped around ep 14 or so. Revenge of Gumiho was pretty good, some slow moments but I did finish. My girlfriend is a gumiho, ep 1 was great but had no desire to watch after ep 3. SS I really enjoy. MK I enjoyed even with no eng sub so I might like it even more after the subbing is available. Both SS & MK have very strong, interesting casts. It is done well and I will watch all the episodes. My choice of dramas has to have elements of a good script, pleasing scenery, strong casts, romance, humor, and HAVE to have eye candy or else I might as well go read a book.

honestly, i understand why MK had such a low rating. the story took forever to get started. i didnt understand the whole beginning. they wasted 5 minutes on her chasing after a horse and all i could think was, when is the actual love story going to happen. i was in love with iswak and the storyline so i'm biased, guilty. it took like half way into the drama for her to give him the note unlike iswak where that was the first scene. and i am not a fan of that second guy's hair, he looks so old compared to jiro. some may think khj's acting might have improved or the role fits him better, but i disagree. maybe his acting will get better with future episodes but from the first, he was so stiff. i couldn't even manage to finish the episode without cringing my way through. and i can't feel the chemistry between the lead actors like with joe and ariel, whom i love to death. the chemistry was lacking, too much fantasies, and too much of a goong vibe (loved goong just remembering the ending makes me cringe again).

and personally, i love my girlfriend is a gumiho. watched every episode and love the chemistry between lee seung gi and shin min ah. they are just so cute and i would choose mgiag over mk any day.

Apparently the download rates were very high (even higher than Iris' average download rates).

It would make sense as the target audience is probably a younger one, and alot of younger people just watch streams and/or download series nowadays.

Honestly, I agree with everyone's opinion in this topic.
The producers of MK and SKS are relying their viewership with the popularity of the actors and hype.
Since MK is the 3rd live adaptation of ISWAK...For me the story is quite predictable...KHJ and JSM looked good together but their role doesn't fit their looks, like piratesxxx's comment about the goong vibe I agree with that.

They must change their comical executions (it must be different with goong). ...
For SKS, even though I love Micky Yoochun, I don't like the plot of SKS....it's so typical for a kdorama....
So even though I like Yoochun, it doesn't mean that I have to watch his series even I don't like the plot...

I'm one of them, hi Apple ss! Long time no see. Coz all are base on JP manga Itazurana Kiss so they're similar to each other. They seem to care about rating. Let watch what they are acting, understand the meaning then say it's good or bad. It said to be lately MBC's drama failed , they are looking forward an improvement, and hope MK can do it.
I havent watched first ep of MK, but KBS, SBS are on air so many hot drama. I'm watching King of Baking, just 4 ep, I'm moved to tear while watching. The cast are not really famous/hot but they play very very well, I'm so touched. Everyone say King of Baking is very hot now, and I love the theme song "Hope is a dream that doesnt fall sleep" sung by Kyuhuyn of Super Junior. And I'm not mistake to watch it. It fascinates me, I have to be patient to wait the next eps

ftlouis (hahaha),
I'm glad you already started watching BK. Honestly only people who are truly watching it will understand why the drama gaining such incredible ratings.

I was thinking before that a drama or a movie would survive if they have an eye candy. It works on me before but now it doesn't and I'm pretty sure people would thinking the same. Yes I agreed that an eye candy with truly awesome plot, script, main and supporting casts and other factors will help gaining interest from the viewers. But not to the too predictable story like MK or else it surely would have a good started even facing drama like BK (where some of the casts are quite unknown for some people) just like My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho (another best drama from Hong sis) did when it is first premiere on tv.

Actually not all current MBC dramas are failed. Dong Yi is doing quite well even though having solid competition from SBS Giant and I Am Legend. Even though the three dramas are from different time slot (DY, G and IAL is for Mon-Tue time slot), there are a good eg for drama which have quite well known actors with good story line and doing quite well.

To me it's a matter of having a good story line (at least) and of course whether or not it fits people taste :P

Let's see how MK is doing once BK end. Me too had high expectation once the news about the Korean adaptation out. People are claiming that it has strong casts (I doubt, some are still stiff at acting) and interesting story line which I agreed (did I say I loved MK story), so, I wish it the best. Wondering if it can beat BK :innocent

Mischievous kiss has soo many imaginations that i find it annoying like i dont mind some but the whole beginning was her daydreaming!
Sungkyuwan scandal was better the first episode was okay but the second episode was really really good and interesting and instead of a dumb main character, i like how shes so smart and strong! im gonna continue watching this drama but i dont think i will for MK.

I haven't watched any of these dramas, but I do understand what a lot of people are saying about MK. There was the Japanese, Taiwanese, anime, and even manga version of the exact same story, I wouldn't be surprised if people are not as interested because it's basically the same thing with different actors. Very typical love story: the guy is smart, the girl is dumb, she likes him, he doesn't like her, but later, they somehow miraculously fall in love. SS I'm not so sure about, but I do like the fact that it's not in the modern time era, because almost all popular KDramas take place in the modern time era. It feels refreshing to see something different for once. I haven't heard about BK, so I have no opinions. But I mean, really why aren't there much viewings?!?!?! Micky Yoochun and Kim Hyun Joong for God's sake! What happened to all of the TVXQ and SS501 fans? I expected them to watch it just for their idols! Well, I'm a Cassie (TVXQ) too, so I'm actually going to start watching SS very soon (as soon as I finish 'Heading to the Ground' and 'Hard to Say I Love You' because I've been lagging in the dramas department due to school). But I somehow got the eerie feeling that a certain agency or company *cough cough* (I won't say who) could be behind this?...

i agree with piratesxxx with the fact that MK has that Goong Vibe...on my own opinion, they almost copied the style..
especially the female lead..they wanted her to look like Yoon Eun Hye, it's like copying and using the top star's (YEH's) "previous portrayal" to gain interest of the public...and it's so unfair to see the hairstyle, the moves, the expressions of the female lead was so similar of the character of YEH in Goong...i hope they'll have the originality because they are making the fans get annoyed with that...

i'm still hoping that MK will have a change of style as the story goes on to the next few episodes.... :V

Well im surprised to hear the low ratings at first
but when I think about it, students or teenagers have to study and stuff
so they don't have the time to watch it when it first broadcast on tv
I guess they would go to the internet to dl it or watch it.
I mean many fans of SS and MK are mostly for teenagers or maybe higher
but it's gonna take a little while for others to pay attention to SS and MK
I'm already captivated by both dramas, well more on SS since I already know the plot and stuff of MK
but Hyunjoong looks hot in MK!
Anyway good luck to both dramas and to me since I'm suppose to be studying and not watching dramas! haha

Nah! It ain't that bad. Read comments with an open mind.
Do visit the soompi thread on Mischievious Kiss (MK), you'll get more information on this drama.
I just watched it on viikii subbed in English but one definitely need to be patient for the vidz to load.
For someone who is picky on dramas, here's my 2 cents worth ... I enjoyed it tremendously... it was hilarious in some scenes.
I love the animation added on the scenes.
Baek Seung Jo tutoring Oh Ha Ni maths was fun fun fun!
MK is MK, made in Korea, interpreted by the Korean scriptwriter(s) and PD.
Comparing to this or that version is not fair.
Enjoy the drama for what it has to offer.
If you're looking for some light hearted entertainment THIS IS IT!
