Yahoo! JAPAN announced its Search Rankings for 2009. In the Name Search category, the first place went to popular Johnny's Entertainment group Arashi, who beat out Korean group Tohoshinki and Japanese group Exile. Within the past year, Arashi's popularity has skyrocketed. Two years ago they placed only seventh in the rankings, while last year they broke into the top three spots. It's no surprise that they were rumoured earlier to be taking over the MC position from their sempai SMAP for NHK's Red and White Singing Contest.
In the category for Television Programs, Fuji Television's reality show 'Ainori' placed first, while Mizushima Hiro and Yamashita Tomohisa's dramas, 'Mei-chan no Shitsuji' and 'Buzzer Beat' placed second and third respectively.

Johnny Delgado dies of cancer

MANILA Actor Johnny Delgado passed away Thursday afternoon after a long battle with lymphoma, or cancer of the lymph nodes, his daughter said. He was 61.
Ina Feleo, daughter of Delgado and wife director Laurice Guillen, made this confirmation in a text message to abs-cbnNEWS.com.
ABS-CBN News reported that Delgado died in his home around 1 p.m. He was surrounded by his family when he passed away. He reportedly died peacefully.
Delgado was diagnosed with cancer in 2008. Early this year, Delgado said in his interview that he was responding well to chemotherapy.
Delgado, Juan Marasigan Feleo in real life, was a noted actor and writer. He appeared in numerous films including "Tanging Yaman," "Kailangan Kita," "La Visa Loca," and "Ligalig."
He was nominated several times in different award giving bodies.
Among his acting awards were best supporting actor for "Ligalig" in 2006 and best actor for "Tanging Yaman" in 2000.
The actor last appeared in Star Cinemas You Got Me opposite Toni Gonzaga and Sam Milby. His recent television roles were GMA 7s Kamandag and ABS-CBNs Maria Flordeluna and May Bukas Pa.

If there's no one there ready or willing to be the next Bruce Lee, there is at least one Thai ready to take on the mantle of Global Martial Arts Icon.
She's 25 years old. She's 1.57m tall. And her name is Jija Yanin.
Like Tony Jaa, another Thai martial artist who is earning a loyal worldwide fanbase with his death-defying feats of athletic prowess, Jija is a throwback to the glory days of Jackie Chan and Jet Li.

'Chen Zhen' starts shooting near Shanghai

HONG KONG -- Production got underway Monday on "Chen Zhen," a martial arts actioner being directed by "Infernal Affairs" co-director Andrew Lau Wai-keung.
Set in 1920s Shanghai, the film features Donnie Yen ("Ip Man," "Highlander: Endgame") as a local resistance fighter who had been taken for dead after a bloody skirmish. After an absence of seven years he returns in disguise to uncover a plot linking the triads and the Japanese.
The film stars Anthony Wong ("Infernal Affairs," " The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor") and Shu Qi ("If You Are The One," "Transporter"). Yen also doubles as action director.
Script and production are by Gordon Chan ("Painted Skin") for Hong Kong's Media Asia and China's Shanghai Film Group through their joint venture alongside Beijing-based Guoli Changsheng and Enlight Pictures as co-producer. Media Asia is also handling international sales and recently scored deals with TF1 for French-speaking Europe and Dream Pictures for Australia and New Zealand.
Filming is near Shanghai and is expected to continue until February.

Singer Ryu Si-won kicks off tour in Japan

Korean actor-cum-singer Ryu Si-won is celebrating the fifth anniversary of his debut in Japan.
The festivities coincided with the start of his concert tour Jump: Ryu Siwon 5th Anniversary Live last weekend at the Saitama Super Arena in Tokyo.
The tour, which has a capacity of 80,000 seats and continues to Nagoya, Yokohama and Osaka, is sold out, a sign of Ryus popularity there.
Ryus last tour of Japan with seven performances in three cities in 2007 was also sold out.

AKB48 Become College Professors?

The idol group AKB48 hosts a regularly broadcast TV documentary/variety show called 'AKB48ネ申[nemosu]TV Season 3'. Recently as part of the program, Oshima Yuko, Sashihara Rino, Noro Kayo and Miyazaki Miho each became 'professors' and gave special lectures to 500 students of Meiji University.
At first the four members were tricked into thinking they will be filming video footage to be included as a bonus for the TV program's DVD. They were told to each give their own unique lessons at a studio with no spectators. The unsuspecting members got on a van that they believed would take them to the 'studio'. Instead it stopped in front of the prestigious Meiji University. That was when they were finally told they won't be filming any bonus footage, and instead will give lectures to college students. They were taken to the university's largest auditorium that was packed with 500 students. Needless to say the members all looked extremely nervous. Among the four, Sashihara, who is famous for being an avid idol fan herself, seemed to have come up with a secret plan for her lesson about 'wotagei'.
