AKB48 Become College Professors?

Thursday November 19, 2009 Japan

Submitted by meoinkie2

The idol group AKB48 hosts a regularly broadcast TV documentary/variety show called 'AKB48ネ申[nemosu]TV Season 3'. Recently as part of the program, Oshima Yuko, Sashihara Rino, Noro Kayo and Miyazaki Miho each became 'professors' and gave special lectures to 500 students of Meiji University.

At first the four members were tricked into thinking they will be filming video footage to be included as a bonus for the TV program's DVD. They were told to each give their own unique lessons at a studio with no spectators. The unsuspecting members got on a van that they believed would take them to the 'studio'. Instead it stopped in front of the prestigious Meiji University. That was when they were finally told they won't be filming any bonus footage, and instead will give lectures to college students. They were taken to the university's largest auditorium that was packed with 500 students. Needless to say the members all looked extremely nervous. Among the four, Sashihara, who is famous for being an avid idol fan herself, seemed to have come up with a secret plan for her lesson about 'wotagei'. ['Wotagei/otagei; ヲタ/オタ芸' are various types of dances/chants/songs ..... (article cut to save bandwidth)

As the hall quietened down and silence descended, Ayaka appeared on stage with her new short bob and a black dress.

Two Love Rumors

Thursday November 19, 2009 Japan

Submitted by meoinkie2

There are two love rumors that started floating around in the entertainment industry of Japan today, but unfortunately both of them already got denied by their agencies. Of course this doesn’t have to mean anything.

The first rumor is about Nakama Yukie and Tanaka Tetsushi being in a relationship. The two met through the dorama "Joshi Deka!" at the end of 2007 and are supposed to have started hanging out since then. They are currently working together again for the TV Asahi dorama "Untouchable", so it’s the perfect time to poke at that rumor again. Nakama’s agency immediately denied those rumors, though. "They’ve been appearing together in several dorama and had a few meals and parties together as colleagues. Eventually they became very good friends, but their relationship didn’t develop any further than that."

The other rumor is still fresh off the press as well. The tabloid "Josei Seven", famous for revealing relationships between actors, published an article about what seems like a date going on between actress Kitagawa Keiko and ..... (article cut to save bandwidth)

Wednesday November 18, 2009 Japan

Submitted by meoinkie2

The live-action film adaptation of Nobuyuki Fukumoto's Kaiji gambling action manga has a sequel green-lit for release in 2011. Tōya Satō directed the first film with Death Note star Tatsuya Fujiwara in the title role of a gambler 3.49 million yen (about US$36,000) in debt. Besides Fujiwara, no other cast members have been announced for the sequel.

In the first film, actress Yūki Amami (Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, Socrates in Love) plays Rinko Endō, a loan shark (originally a male character in the manga) who convinces Kaiji to board a gambling ship to clear his debt with his life literally at stake. Satō previously directed the live-action versions of Gokusen, Grave of the Fireflies, and Sexy Voice and Robo.

There have been three manga sequels since the original 1996-1999 Tobaku Mokushiroku Kaiji manga series ran in Kodansha's Young Magazine, including the ongoing Tobaku Datenshi-Roku Kaiji Kazuya-Hen. The first film opened on October 10 and has earned over 2.1 billion yen (about US$23 million) so far. The Joost website had streamed NTV's 2007-2008 television anime version in the United States.

T-Bolan Frontman Returns

Wednesday November 18, 2009 Japan

Submitted by meoinkie2

Singer Moritomo Arashi is making a comeback 10 years after the breakup of one of the country's major rock bands. The former vocalist of defunct rock band T-Bolan, Morimoto (44) said yesterday that he is releasing a solo single later this month. "Kizuna," due out on November 26, is his first release since T-Bolan split up at the end of 1999. At the time, the band members said the split was due to musical differences, but then Moritomo revealed that he was suffering from psychogenic dysphonia. The medical disorder is a loss of voice caused by stress or emotional trauma. Moritomo underwent a couple of years of rehabilitation before becoming a radio presenter in 2001. In August 2006, he sang the national anthem before a hugely anticipated WBA boxing world title match that drew a TV audience rating of over 41%. He is scheduled to perform for 2,000 lottery winners at a "fan meeting" in Shibuya, Tokyo on Christmas Day. The roots of T-Bolan go back to 1987 and the band made their major label debut in 1991 with the single "Kanashimi wa Itaiyo." They followed that up with a string of hits and ..... Sakai Noriko Goes Back to School

Thursday November 19, 2009 Japan

Submitted by meoinkie2

Sakai Noriko (38) started to get her life back on track yesterday, ten days after she was found guilty on charges of drug possession and use and received a 3-year suspended sentence. Sakai, described in the media these days as a "former actress," visited the campus of Souzou Gakuen University in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture, where she has enrolled in the social work department. She toured the campus, about an hour north of Tokyo on the shinkansen, chatting with other students and even enjoying a tea ceremony in the school's tearoom. She was soberly but fashionably dressed in dark blue and her hair, which was black for her trial last week, was again dyed brown. She was accompanied by an entourage that included Aizawa Masahisa (60), the former president of her management company, Sun Music, who demoted himself from the post over the scandal. Aizawa has been like a substitute father for Sakai since recruiting her as a teenager. Speaking on her behalf yesterday he said, "We had planned for her to attend the school about once a month, but from December on she will be focusing on online learning." He added, "She ..... Masaharu Fukuyama on NHK's Kohaku

Thursday November 19, 2009 Japan

Submitted by meoinkie2

Singer-actor Fukuyama Masaharu (40) has been named to the lineup for this year's "Kohaku Uta Gassen." It will be his second appearance on NHK's annual New Year's Eve concert, and the first since he sang "melody" in 1993. The appearance is undoubtedly tied to the fact that Fukuyama is playing the lead role in next year's taiga drama. In the 2010 yearlong historical drama series, "Ryomaden," he will play the legendary 19th century samurai Sakamoto Ryoma. Usually the following year's taiga star appears on Kohaku as a judge, and in fact Fukuyama will be the first solo artist to do so as a performer. His popularity is such that an on-stage appearance is likely to give the show a needed ratings boost. In his 20th anniversary year, he performed at Nippon Budokan for the first time; went on a 4-month nationwide concert tour; released two singles in the same year for the first time since 2000; and released his first original album since 2001.
