Screen empress Liu returns in '37'

Saturday November 21, 2009 Hong Kong

Submitted by sChiZoO14

HONG KONG -- Once the most celebrated actress in China, award-winning Chinese screen legend Liu Xiaoqing will return to film in Hong Kong director Dennis Chens drama 37," in a role that rendered her unrecognizable, Liu told the Hollywood Reporter.

Liu sported a false nose and a set of fake teeth, shaved her eyebrows, altered her posture and learned to speak another language to play a Mongolian matriarch, nurturing a choir of 37 young children.

Its a role no one would cast me in. She was an indigenous Mongolian woman who grew up on the back of a horse, and was illiterate, unglamorous and not pretty. I played completely against type. Its like a butterfly turning into a cocoon, Liu said, displaying her famous confidence. The first day I showed up on set in full makeup, nobody realized it was me.

The role was the biggest challenge of my career. I had to re-learn how to walk, smile, and talk, she said. But Liu admitted the challenges the role brought paled in comparison to her real life drama. In 2002, Liu was arrested in Beijing for tax ..... (article cut to save bandwidth)

Banned director brings romance film to Hong Kong

Saturday November 21, 2009 Hong Kong

Submitted by sChiZoO14

HONG KONG -- A prominent Chinese director banned by Beijing from making movies brought his new gay romance film to Hong Kong on Friday for what is likely the last of a handful of screenings on his home soil.

In 2006, China banned Lou Ye from shooting movies for five years after he screened "Summer Palace" at the Cannes Film Festival without government approval. In the film Lou tackled the Chinese military's brutal crackdown on pro-democracy student protesters at Beijing's Tiananmen Square in June 1989.

But he defied the ban, secretly shooting the love story "Spring Fever" with small, digital cameras in the eastern city Nanjing last year. He also entered it at Cannes this year, where it won best screenplay in May

In "Spring Fever," he takes on homosexuality -- another taboo in China -- with graphic gay sex scenes. The 115-minute movie is about a private investigator hired to spy on a married man having a gay affair. But the investigator falls into a love triangle with his own girlfriend and the boyfriend of the husband he is investigating.

Commercial distributors have bought "Spring Fever" for release in ..... (article cut to save bandwidth)
